All Christian beliefs should be based on the Bible. You probably agree with that statement. But WHY? The WHY is the most important part of this question. Once we understand why Christian beliefs are based solely on the Bible, reading the Bible will become so much easier!
5 Reasons We Base our Belief System on the Bible
It is the authority of God
All of scripture are God’s Words and therefore should be read as having the ultimate authority in life. Check out 2 Timothy 3:16, Jeremiah 30:1-2, and John 14:26 to see just a few of the places God makes it clear it is His words you are reading!
Our ultimate conviction that the words of the Bible are God’s words happens overtime though. As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit speaks in and through the words of the Bible to our hearts and gives us an inner assurance that these are the words of God to us. (1 Corinthians 2:13-14)
It is written clearly
Everything we need to know in order to understand salvation and to grow in our relationship with Christ is clearly laid out in scripture.
I know, I know. Sometimes it is HARD to understand, but just because it is hard doesn’t mean it is unclear! What is necessary for our salvation and our Christian growth is clearly written. The hard places are there for you to pause and press into God for a deeper understanding. Remember, the Holy Spirit will help you understand as you press in.
The Bible is necessary for maintaining our spiritual life and knowing God’s will
You can’t grow in your relationship with God without knowing the Bible. It is necessary for you to know the Bible in order to walk closely with God.
You can acknowledge He exists, but you can’t come to know and follow what He asks unless you clearly understand what He says in His Word. As Jesus states in Matthew 4:4, “Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.
The Bible is sufficient
The Bible contains all the words God intended us to have as we learn how to walk with Him. This should encourage us to go to scripture to learn about Him before we go to other resources. The sufficiency of the scriptures should remind us we are to add nothing to the Bible and that we consider no other writing of equal value to the scriptures. The Bible alone is God’s Word and what he chose to reveal to us.
So why do we base all our Christian beliefs on the Bible? The Bible is the authority of God, clearly written for us to understand, necessary for our salvation and spiritual walk, and sufficient to guide us and lead us in our walk with the Lord.
