Yesterday I listened to yet another woman look me in the eyes as she desperately tried to follow Jesus and uttered, “I’m just too much ______”
Fill in the blank with whatever you want because I’ve heard it all. Too weak, too strong, too independent, too dependent, too opinionated, too passionate, too easy-going, too laid back, too submissive, not submissive enough, too ugly, too fat, too skinny. You get the point
The list could go on and on.
I bet if you’re honest, you’ve filled in the blank yourself a time or two.
But if I were sitting across the table from you, I would look you in your eyes and say the same thing I say to every single one of these women.
You are not too much.
Your personality is God given, God designed, God ordained, and God loved. And this isn’t just my opinion. We can just walk through the Bible to see how God views you.
First, the Psalmist wasn’t lying when he wrote in Psalm 139
I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Second, God wasn’t lying when he described creating mankind in Genesis 1:27
“So God created mankind in his own image. In the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them”
Third, God gave us a glimpse into how you were created in Jeremiah 1:25
“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you…”
God’s Word Doesn’t Lie
No where in scripture does it say anything about God thinking you were “too much”. Instead, everywhere you look, scripture tells us how God made you perfectly. And not only that, you were created in his image, exactly as he needed you to be in order to fulfill your place in the body of Christ. The only thing we don’t see in scripture is that he doesn’t describe the “perfect personality” needed to be a good Christian because there isn’t one.
What Scripture Does Require of You
what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to
Micah 6:8
love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
God asks you to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbling with him, and I’m pretty sure you can do all of that with whatever personality you have been given.
God’s Work in You
Will God continue to refine, convict, teach, and draw you closer to him as you continue to walk with him? Absolutely. Do you need to lay some of your natural tendencies before his throne so he can guide you? Yes. Does God need to continue to reveal to you where you need to obey more? Of course.
But this does not mean you are “too much”. God gave you the exact personality he desired you to have in order to accomplish his purpose.
So next time you think to yourself “I’m just too much”, remember the truth. You are not too much of anything. You are a representation of Christ, created in the image of God to share the gospel with the world.
Today embrace that truth.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
